Two years ago I made a feeble attempt to start a blog on another site. My blog on opening a new school was nestled between Girls Gone Wild and Spielberg wannabe’s. Needless to say, my site did not attract a lot of traffic. In fact there were zero comments. I became distracted by the reality of opening a new school and abandoned my blog. On Monday of this week I attended a class on blogging and podcasting. I decided maybe if I knew what I was doing, my blog might be more successful. The enticement of a free ipod for attending didn’t hurt either. I was very excited about the possible ways I could use my blog to enhance my communication with my staff, parents, students, and community. The thought that I could have professional dialog with colleagues across the nation fueled my enthusiasm. I hit my first obstacle when the instructor told me I had to name my domain. He said to think carefully because it can not be changed. What intelligent, catchy title could I give this blog? Something that represented my school but was more interesting than just Walker Creek Elementary. As I typed and deleted my ideas, I realized the class was moving on so I decided to go with “Howling at the Moon” because we are the Coyotes. Probably in a few days I will look at that title and wonder what was I thinking or drinking that day. Then I had to select my background. At least I can change it. We did a few more cosmetic changes to our blog and then we were ready to begin our blog. Our instructor shared a blog from a principal in our district. I was impressed and intimidated. Will I be able to produce a blog as thought provoking and scholarly as his? Do I really have anything to say? Would anyone even want to read my blog? Does the world really need another blogger? I guess I will never know unless I forge ahead, throw caution to the wind and post my first blog.
